The workaround turned out to be that I have to install SF 9.0c AFTER I've installed the audio drivers AND configured 9.0a to use them. SF 9 has no such dialog on my system, and attempting to change the audio preferences crashes the app (when I click "preferences" actually). In fact, SF8 would pop up a dialog stating that my system drivers had changed, and prod me to set the preferences. SF8 was always fine with this, but SF9 is not. I install drivers last on my system, so whenever I install application patches, I restore a backup copy of the system BEFORE driver installation, update the apps, and then load the drivers, and then configure my apps for those drivers.
I finally realized it was because I applied the update before installing my EMU drivers. It would crash when I opened preferences, and it would crash when I tried to add toolbars. My copy of SF 9.0a also became completely corrupted after installing the 9.0c update. so long I'll think it isn't working, so I'll click it again, which takes seconds to process.
